Their Food Story:

I am making my Grandma Anne Deaton's Apple Pie that is a family favorite! My Grandma uses a traditional double pie crust, but I love a lattice top and so I'm showing how it's done. Instructions from Betty Crocker's Cookbook: Place 5-7 strips (depending on size of pie) across filling. Weave a cross-strip through center by first folding back every other strip going the other way. Continue weaving until lattice is complete, folding back alternate strips each time cross-strip is added. (Or take a shortcut! Do not weave strips simply lay second half of strips across first strips) Trim end of strips.

Grandma Deaton’s Apple Pie

Makes 10 servings

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 Granny Smith green apples, peeled and sliced

  • 3/4 to 1 cup sugar (half light brown and half white)

  • 2 very lightly rounded tablespoons All Purpose flour

  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

  • Dash nutmeg

  • Dash salt

  • 1 and 1/2 to 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • Double pie crust or enough pie crust for lattice topped pie

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Mix dry ingredients. Then mix dry ingredients with apples and stir until well coated.

Fill pie with coated apples and any juice. Sprinkle lemon juice over entire top of filling.

Cut butter into little cubes and dot entire top of filling.

Using fork make the first or last letter of someone's name. I always create a fancy "D". The steam will come out of these tiny holes.

Crimp a 2 inch strip of foil around edges of pie crust. Remove foil 10-15 minutes before pie is fully baked. Bake 1 hour.. If serving immediately, serve with vanilla ice cream. If cooling first, sprinkle pie with powdered sugar before serving.
